Sight Words
To help with reading fluency, we will learn to read the 220 Dolch words in the first grade. Every month the students will have 24-26 words that they learn and will need to master. Every week we focus on just 6-7 of the words. We build sentences, make flash cards, do word wall games, partner up and play memory etc. At the end of the month, I will individually quiz the students to make sure that they know the Dolch words for the month. When they master the month's Dolch words they will receive a certificate. I will email the monthly lists at the beginning of each month and all the lists can be found below.
The Dolch words are the 220 most frequently found words in books that children read. The lists are in order of frequency. Children who learn these words have a good foundation for strong reading. Many of these words cannot be sounded out because they do not follow decoding rules. These words must be learned as sight words. Any extra practice at home reading these words will be beneficial to your child's reading development. These words are seperate from the weekly spelling words and the weekly vocabulary words. I will assess each child at the end of each month on the words. If you feel your child knows the monthly words before the end of the month, please send me a note and I will assess them earlier. If you feel these lists are too easy for your child, please keep in mind they are just practice and we will be reading much more complicated words in leveled reading groups and through out the school day.
